The handsomest drowned man in the world
“The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” begins when the children of a small coastal village see an unfamiliar bulge in the sea. When it washes up on the beach they realize it is a drowned man. For the rest of the afternoon they play with the corpse until another villager sees them and tells the rest of the villagers. The men of the village then carry the body to the nearest house, remarking that he weighs almost as much as a horse. He is also taller than other men and barely fits in the house.
Upon reading “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World”, I am bombarded by visual images, smells, and sounds in Marquez’s words. His vivid use of imagery is apparent throughout the story and it allows the reader to get a sense of the reality in it. In addition to the mentioned analyses, there are a few other pieces of literary interpretation including a slideshow presentation in which I present Marquez’s story as having mythical content and structure. Through the creation of this website, I have broadened the number of literary techniques known to me as well as combined them in order to mold my own interpretations of the text. I established what worked for me when analyzing the story and presented it on my own terms. The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World tells the tale of a small fishing village. It’s a coastal, cliff-side town, a desert-like cape with no flowers, and so little land that the residents have to throw their dead over the cliffs and into the sea rather than bury them in the ground. The residents are a simple group of people, who believe in myths as strongly as what they see with their eyes. It's such a small village, that the all the men combined fit into seven boats, and there are only about twenty houses among them all. The village was interrupted by the arrival of a dead body washed up by the waves. This drowned man has a huge impact on the village, which is changed forever by his arrival. The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World was commissioned by the Music in Great Irish Houses Festival with funds from the Arts Council of Ireland, and I am particularly grateful to Ciara Higgins, the Festival's director, for asking me to write it in the first place. The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World not an usual story, which makes it more interesting. The story makes you want to read on and find out what is next. Personally the story was enjoyable, and I would recomend it to anyone that enjoys fictional stories. Gabriel Garcia will have you wondering who the drowned man is as well as I was. So open your literature book to page 175 be careful, dont get drowned in the magic, and fiction of the story, or you just might end up dead.
