The Common Sense Society was founded in 2009 by American and European young professionals in Budapest, Hungary. CSS sponsors two summer academies, publishes educational material, and hosts regular events in Europe and the United States. Our statement of purpose remains unchanged: CSS celebrates the Western heritage, wherein the ideas of liberty and equality have been asserted, tested, and proven over the course of four millennia. This same history reveals that mankind does not progress inevitably toward freedom or justice. Indeed, many attempts to ignore history, deny human nature, and engineer a utopian vision have initiated some of the most horrific episodes in human memory. Because ideas have consequences, CSS continues the noble tradition of argumentation and debate by providing regular forums for the exchange of these ideas. We are not bystanders to the development of our civilization; we are participants in defining our future of sustainable freedom.

The Common Sense Society exists to promote civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and the ideals of responsible liberty among university students and young professionals in Hungary. CSS believes that the civic education and political engagement of young people is a crucial aspect of Hungary’s transition from a post-communist state towards a truly free and prosperous society. CSS hosts regular debates, panel discussions, lectures, workshops, film screenings, and book events. We are not by-standers to the development of our civilization; we are participants in defining our future of sustainable freedom.

Why is or was this more common sense society making up our society back then? Answer: people were better educated back then in schools and in the home. The U.S. ranked near the top in the world on education around 60-70 years ago. Believe it or not, now we are down to number 25 or so.
